England to face Croatia in 2010 World Cup qualifying

England face a challenging test to reach the 2010 World Cup after they were drawn in the same qualifying group as Croatia and the Ukraine in the race to reach South Africa. Having slipped into the second pot of seeds England will have an immediate opportunity to atone for the two defeats to the Croats that ensured they did not reach Euro 2008.

Only the group winner qualifies automatically, while the top eight runners-up from the nine groups enter play-offs.

And England also face testing trips to Eastern Europe in Group 6 as they must face Belarus, Kazakhstan and Andorra.

Scotland will look to build on their hugely promising Euro 2008 qualifying campaign - where they just lost out to Italy and France - as they face the Netherlands, Norway, Macedonia and Iceland.

Northern Ireland, who also performed extremely creditably in Euro 2008 qualification, are in a tough group as they face the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and San Marino.

The Republic of Ireland are up against the World Champions, Italy, as well as Bulgaria, Cyprus, Georgia and Montenegro.

And Wales were drawn in Group 4, where they will face Germany and Russia, as well as stiff challenges from Finland, Azerbaijan and Leichtenstein.
