Arbeloa confident that Liverpool will qualify for second round
Alvaro Arbeloa insists Liverpool will qualify for the second round knock-out stage and claims he is not even thinking about the prospect of being dumped out of the Champions League this evening. The Spainish international is confident Liverpool will succeed in the must-win clash with Porto at Anfield.
And after the convincing win at Newcastle on Saturday, Arbeloa is more than hopeful that Liverpool can beat both Porto and Marseille to qualify from the group.
"Nobody in the team is talking about anything other than victory," said the defender.
"For us to lose this tie doesn't even bear thinking about, the word lose does not exist.
"Being eliminated from the Champions League would be hard to swallow for everybody, but it's not going to happen.
"All the players promised after the defeat away at Besiktas that we would do everything we could to get nine points out of the last three games - and we will."
Liverpool need to beat Porto and Marseille in their final two group games to stand any real chance of qualifying for the next stage, but Arbeloa knows the Portuguese side will provide a tough test.
"The match against Porto is like a final for us," he added.
"The only aim we have is to win the game, it's the only result that is worth thinking about, it doesn't matter how they play, we have to win the game.
"Porto are a tough opponent and they proved that to us in our opening game in the competition.
"They have a quality team with players such as Ricardo Quaresma supplying great service to the strikers.
"It's going to be a hard test for our defenders because we cannot afford to give them any room or space to exploit and play in.
"But after our good win at Newcastle, the team is on a real high, and so we're going into the game with real confidence."
