Wasps to decide fate of brawling fan

London Wasps are still deciding whether to hand a life ban to the supporter who leant across the advertising hoardings to attack a Clermont Auvergne player with a matchday programme on Saturday. Alan Black, an employee of the RFU and former Wasps captain, became embroiled in a second-half fight involving players from both sides.

He appeared to take a series of poorly directed swipes at Clermont prop Martin Scelzo and was promptly ejected from the ground by stewards.

Wasps chief executive Tony Copsey threatened after the game to impose a life ban on Black, although he backtracked after vehement support for the club stalwart from coach Shaun Edwards and captain Lawrence Dallaglio.

European Rugby chiefs have ordered an investigation into the incident, which overshadowed a sensational game that saw 20-year-old Wasps fly half Danny Cipriani turn in another man-of-the-match performance.

Wasps won by a single point but it was Clermont left celebrating after a late try secured them an all-important losing bonus point.

Former Wasps player Alex King hailed Cipriani as the future of English rugby after seeing his former pupil play a leading hand in two of Wasps' three tries.

King, who left Wasps in the summer after 11 years of service, said: "Danny is ready for international rugby. No doubt about it.

"England are lucky in having a number of talented young fly halves but Danny is top of the tree.

"I hope he can dominate the England No.10 shirt for a number of years."
