Appiah ruled out of African Cup of Nations

Stephen Appiah has been ruled out of the African Cup of Nations after suffering complications to a long-term knee problem. The Ghana captain, who plays his club football for Turkish side Fenerbahce, is expected to miss the next two months of the season.

Appiah is set to undergo tests in Italy to try and rectify the problem, but doctors have already dismissed his chances of taking part in the showpiece event.

"The news has come as a bitter blow to Stephen," a statement on the player's website said.

"[He] has been working hard in the last week or so to prove he is fine and fit.

"Stephen [would] like to say a big thank you to all his fans and well wishers who have sent him get well soon messages in the last few weeks.

"He is very grateful for your support."

Ghana, who are hosting the competition, have been drawn in Group A along with Morocco, Guinea and Namibia.

Ghana's first game is in Accra against Guinea on January 20.
