PSV pip Feyenoord to winter title
PSV just pipped Feyenoord to the unofficial title of winter champions on Sunday, Feyenoord's 1-1 draw at sc Heerenveen allowing PSV, who won 2-0 at NAC Breda, to go top on goal difference. Gerald Sibon scored a deserved equaliser for sc Heerenveen when he fired in a free kick in the closing stages.
Feyenoord were lucky not to go behind early on in their tie as Heerenveen's Gianni Zuiverloon missed a great chance against his old club on his 21st birthday, shooting straight at goalkeeper Henk Timmer when clean through. Feyenoord took the lead only a minute later when Andwelé Slory created a goal for himself from nothing.
Heerenveen went on the offensive after going behind but Kevin Hofland and Henk Timmer kept them out in the first half. After half-time, a Michael Dingsdag header was cleared off the line by Slory and just when it seemed that Heerenveen had missed their opportunity, Sibon scored the equaliser.
PSV drew level with Feyenoord on 36 points after 17 matches after their victory at NAC.
PSV created a number of chances in the first half but only scored in the 45th minute when Danny Koevermans was sent clean through on goal by teammate Kenneth Perez and slotted home his tenth of the season.
After half-time, NAC created more problems for PSV and outplayed them for the first 20 minutes of the second period.
The tide was only truly turned when Jan Wouters replaced Koevermans with Otman Bakkal in the 79th minute.
PSV scored their second goal in injury time when NAC goalkeeper Jelle ten Rouwelaar went up for a corner. The set-piece went straight to PSV goalkeeper Gomes and the Brazilian threw the ball over the halfway line for Perez to run onto from his own half. The Dane took the ball to within range of the open goal and rolled it in.
The match was head coach Wouters' last in charge of PSV as his temporary period comes to an end on 1 January when the next interim head coach, Sef Vergoossen, takes over. Huub Stevens will become the next permanent PSV manager in July.
