Murray wins Qatar Open

British number one Andy Murray claimed the fourth ATP title of his career with victory in the Qatar Open after the Scot battled to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka. Murray finished as runner-up in last season's event but produced a battling display in an entertaining encounter to get his year off to a flying start.

The tournament was Murray's first since his split from American coach Brad Gilbert and his run to the final included impressive victories against Nikolay Davydenko and Thomas Johansson.

The opening set saw both players struggle to hold the initiative as the first three games went against serve. Murray lead 3-1 and clung on to his service game to take the set 6-4.

Wawrinka had won both previous encounters between the two and the world number 36 hit back in the second set to level the match.

Both players proved more solid on serve in the second, with the Swiss claiming the crucial break at 4-5 to take the set.

However the Scot regained the momentum and quickly went a break up at the start of the final set. The double-break seemed inevitable and Murray duly obliged, racing to a 5-2 lead.

Murray served for the match with none of the nerves that had inhibited his flow earlier in the match, with Wawrinka's wayward backhand gifting Murray the match and the title.
