Jankovic sees off Serena

Jelena Jankovic overcame a painful thigh injury to defeat defending champion Serena Williams 6-3 6-4 to reach the Australian Open semi-finals. The Serbian ace recovered from a slow start to overcome her American opponent who was troubled by a large blister throughout the contest.

Williams cruised past Jankovic in last year's tournament, sending the number three seed out in the fourth round.

But there was to be no repeat this time around and the 22-year-old produced a stunning performance to set up a last four clash with either Justine Henin or Maria Sharapova.

"It was an unbelievable match," Jankovic told the BBC. "I am still shaking.

"It's amazing to beat the defending champion and a champion like Serena, it doesn't happen every day.

"Getting revenge for last year feels so good and I am so happy to be in the semi-final, having no expectations, having injuries, and not really thinking that I can go far.

"In the second set I felt a sharp pain in my quad, and it was like a knife went in my leg. It was really painful," Jankovic added.

"I thought, 'Oh, my God, again, another one? I'm kind of sick of all these injuries'.

"But I'm like a wounded animal, I still keep going.

"The most important thing is that I fight on the court, and I always give my best and I never give up - those are the qualities that got me through the semi-final."
