Nadal through to semi-final stage
Rafael Nadal expressed his relief after overcoming Finland's Jarkko Nieminen to seal his place in the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The Spaniard, who fought off two set points in the opening set, prevailed 7-5 6-3 6-1 to set up a last four clash with either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Mikhail Youzhny.
Nadal, who had never been past the quarter final stage at the AustralianOpen until this year, found himself on the ropes at the end of the first set.
But after saving two set points, the 21-year-old cruised to victory, despite the best efforts of his opponent.
"He had set points against me in the first set and he had a good chance with the second serve," Nadal told the BBC. "He missed the return but he played great today and he has started the season very well.
"I am very happy to be in the semi-final. It's a very important tournament for me to start the season well.
"I will be trying my best to continue on in the tournament and I'm playing very well here."
