Boks score late equaliser against Angola

South Africa scored a late equalising goal in their opening Group D game with Angola much to the delight of their coach Carlos Alberto Parreira. The swerving drive, scored by Club Bruges' Elrio van Heerden, cancelled out an impressive goal by Manchester United's latest acquisition: Mateus 'Manucho' Goncalves.

The 24-year-old left-winger or striker has had Sir Alex Ferguson licking his lips in anticipation, and he hopes a work permit will be just around the corner. And on Wednesday night he hinted at what the Premier League can expect.

In his African Cup Nations debut Manucho scored his sixth goal in only 14 national appearances with a brave header in the first half. But he also tracked back well, and his general all round play was encouraging for United fans.

The pressure was on South Africa from the off, however, as they are due to host the 2010 world cup, and many pundits hope that they have a good tournament to justify their hosting of football's top tournament.

Brazilian Parreira, who steered his country to the 1994 world cup, had to use all his experience to gee up his profligate Bok chargers. He had opted to plump for youth over experience. But after a number of misses record scorer Benni McCarthy was conspicuous by his absence.

South Africa thought they had scored their equalising goal against Angola when the ball crossed the line into the net with only nine minutes remaining. But the referee ruled that there had been a foul in the box.

Reinvigorated, Parreira's team pushed on and finally found their leveller, meaning both games in Group D played on Wednesday resulted in draws.
