Djokovic stuns Federer to reach Australian Open Final
Novak Djokovic produced a superb performance to stun world number one Roger Federer in their Australian Open semi-final, winning in straight sets, 7-5 3-6 7-6 (7-5). The Serbian, seeded number three, now has a fantastic opportunity to win his first Grand Slam when he takes on unseeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final on Sunday.
Federer had breezed into the last four but struggled against 20-year-old Djokovic, who was consistently accurate with his raking groundstrokes.
It required a superb fightback by Djokovic to win the first set, though, and his recovery from 5-3 down to win the set 7-5 proved a huge psychological boost.
And he was always ahead in the second after an early break of serve put Federer under pressure and the Swiss, going for his fourth Australian Open title and third in succession, was unable to respond, making numerous unforced errors.
Djokovic soon forced the second break and, although Federer pulled one back, his serve was simply too strong as he closed out the set with a minimum of fuss.
The third was a tighter affair as the pair matched each other stride for stride, although Djokovic wasted numerous break points that would have extended his advantage.
The set went with serve and to a tie-break, which Djokovic won after taking one point against the serve before dropping to his knees in celebration.
