Torres relieved that Benitez will stay at Liverpool

Fernando Torres admits he could have left Liverpool had manager Rafael Benitez lost his job. The Spanish international, signed for £20.6million last summer, has made an electric start to his career on Merseyside.

However, he admits the uncertainty surrounding the future of Benitez had been playing on his mind.

He said: "I could not imagine a Liverpool without Rafael Benitez. I do not know what would happen if he left."

Liverpool's American co-owner, Tom Hicks, last week moved to quash speculation that he and Benitez did not see eye-to-eye and Torres is relieved that Benitez's position now appears to be safe.

"It is not just the Spanish players who were worried for Rafa," Torres added.

"The manager has signed many players and has stood by them all. We hoped that everything would be resolved in the best way possible for him and the club - that is what we all wanted."
