Toseland: Spain shouldn't suffer over Hamilton abuse
James Toseland insists that Spain should not be stripped of its Formula One Grand Prix after the Lewis Hamilton racism row. Two-time World Superbike champion Toseland has raced on the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, where Hamilton was abused last week.
And after Formula One's governing body, The FIA, today announced plans to introduce an anti-racism drive this season, he believes that Hamilton will rise above the taunts of 'idiots'.
"There's no place for what's happened - either in sport or outside of it - but I don't think you can punish all Spaniards for the actions of a few idiots," said Toseland, who will make his Moto GP debut next month.
"I just can't believe that those guys were able to sit in the stands for so long watching those tests without being arrested."
Toseland has backed Hamilton to start the 2009 season with the number One plate on his car - which is awarded to the winner of the previous year's championship.
He said: "Lewis has come in and shocked the Formula One guys and it's great for Britain.
"I think he should just ignore it and go out and do us proud on the track and try to get his No2 plate to a No 1 plate."
