Fears over Ronaldo after latest setback

AC Milan and Brazil striker Ronaldo suffered a potentially career threatening injury after rupturing a tendon in his left knee on Wednesday night. The 31-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, faces nine months on the sidelines after leaving the field in tears during the clash with Livorno.

Ronaldo, who had only been on the pitch a matter of minutes after coming on as substitute, landed awkwardly after trying to win a header against Jose Vidigal.

"I heard a horrible sound, like a bang, it was a strange sound," said Livorno goalkeeper Marco Amelia told the BBC.

The former Barcelona and Inter striker suffered the same injury in 1999 before enduring a recurrence of the problem in April 2000 - an injury which saw him miss 20 months of first-team action.

"I don't want to say it's the end of his career because only time can decide - all we can do is stand by him," said Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"We're all very sorry and worried about what happened to Ronaldo.

"Our players all left the stadium in a hurry to go to the hospital to check on his condition, I think that's the right way to stand by a player who's suffering."
