Smit retained as South Africa skipper

John Smit has been retained as South African captain after leading his side to World Cup glory, new coach Peter De Villiers has confirmed. The hooker, who plays his club rugby for French side Clermont Auvergne, was Jake White's skipper as South Africa won the William Webb Ellis trophy in Paris in October.

White resigned after the tournament but De Villers has confirmed he will not look to change the captain, with Smit glad to accept.

"To be offered the chance to continue with the Springboks is a challenge I would never refuse," said Smit, 29.

Smit has captained the side in 49 tests and De Villiers paid tribute to his will to win.

"He has global respect and he has the desire to add to what was achieved in France last year," explained De Villers.

"This is a new chapter for Springbok rugby, but I believe we must build on the success of the World Cup and it made sense to me to further invest in John's excellent leadership and his ability as a player."
