Montgomerie inspired to victory by the Ryder Cup
Colin Montgomerie has gone through to the third round of the WGC Match Play championship in Toucan after being inspired by the spirit of the Ryder Cup. The Scot has been struggling so far this season but defeated Charles Howell with a stunning comeback on the back nine to win by a stroke.
And the eight time winner of the European Order of Merit admitted after the tie that it was the Ryder Cup, which he has won five times, that inspired him to victory with a stunning series of birdies.
Montgomerie said: "Charles birdied the 11th to go all square and my caddie said, 'right, Mr Montgomerie, it's Ryder Cup mode'.
"I was four under from then on, so he should say that more often in stroke-play events.
"We're in the last 16 and delighted. I look forward to playing again tomorrow."
Montgomerie will face Stewart Cink, who beat Open champion Padraig Harrington, while Paul Casey, who is the only other Brit left in the draw, beat Bradley Dredge 2&1.
Tiger Woods progressed smoothly, winning 3&2 against Arron Oberholser.
