PSV close in on fourth successive title
PSV have moved a step closer to their fourth successive league championship after beating De Graafschap 4-1. The Eindhoven-based club appeared very vulnerable before half-time in Sunday's match but they came from behind as they scored their 3,998th Eredivisie goal. Only Ajax have previously scored 4,000 Eredivisie goals.
De Graafschap took the lead when a Lasse Schöne shot from distance went in off both posts but PSV were level immediately when Danko Lazovic headed in.
De Graafschap went close to taking the lead again on two occasions but Reinier Robbemond and Niklas Tarvajärvi both struck the post.
Otman Bakkal then missed two one-on-one opportunities for PSV against goalkeeper Jimmy van Fessem, but a minute after his second miss, early in the second half, he made amends by heading in a corner.
The lead encouraged PSV and they dominated the rest of the match.
Eight minutes before the final whistle, PSV were awarded a penalty which Timmy Simons converted. The penalty was given after Ibrahim Afellay was fouled by Leon Hese when clean through on goal. Hese was sent-off and to compound De Graafschap's woes TV replays showed that the foul was outside the penalty area.
Lazovic scored PSV's fourth in injury time but the final score flattered the Eredivisie leaders.
