Champion Contador to miss Tour de France
Tour de France winner Alberto Contador will not be allowed to compete in this year's race, according to Patrice Clerc, the Tour Organizer. Contador won last year's Tour but has been caught up in the drug controversies surrounding his Astana team.
And Clerc has confirmed that Astana will not be allowed to compete in this year's race, although they will be permitted to race in 2009 if they stay clear of drug controversies this year.
There were three scandals involving the Astana team, with Matthias Kessler falling foul of the rules before Alexander Vinokourov and Andrey Kashechkin both tested positive for drug abuse last year's Tour de France itself.
