Lorenzo on top as Toseland falls ill

James Toseland climbed off his sick-bed to produce a fine qualifying performance ahead of the Spanish MotoGP in Jerez, but the Briton was outshone by rookie Jorge Lorenzo, who destroyed the field and will start on pole position in Sunday's race. Toseland has been suffering from bronchitis but qualified eighth.

But 20-year-old Spaniard Lorenzo, who finished second in his first ever MotoGP race in Qatar three weeks ago, dominated the day and was on pole by over six tenths of a second in setting a new pole position record for the circuit.

The Fiat Yamaha man has been on top throughout testing and took that form into qualifying, regularly beating his own fastest lap to force fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa into second.

Toseland has been struggling all weekend and went to hospital late on Friday night but produced a brave display on his Tech 3 Yamaha bike to finish on the third row, but his team-mate, Colin Edwards, was in superb form and will start on the front row of the grid after qualifying third.

Casey Stoner, the world champion and winner of the season's first race, will start in seventh after a somewhat disappointing qualifying session, while Nicky Hayden will start in fourth and Valentino Rossi in fifth.
