Pendleton retains women's sprint title

Victoria Pendleton has won the women's sprint final at the Track Cycling Worlds in Manchester, taking both legs of her final to retain the title. Her victory takes Team Great Britain's medal haul to seven, equalling their tally from the 2007 championships in Palma.

The 27-year-old fought off the challenge of Lithuania's Simona Krupeckaite, who was forced to settle for silver, while USA's Jennie Reed faces a ride off against China's Guo Shuang for bronze.

And Pendleton, who will race again in the keirin on Sunday, said: "It felt fantastic, better than last year.

"Last year I thought I had made a giant leap, but this year I managed to find a bit more.

"It wasn't easy, but I felt quite in control and really comfortable."

Elsewhere Chris Hoy and Matt Crampton made it through to the finals of the men's keirin.
