Doncaster mile highlight of the day
The weekend following the Grand National is always going to be something of "the morning after the night before" - however, there are some interesting cards today with the major Flat meeting at Doncaster, All-Weather racing at Kempton and Wolverhampton, and two jumps fixtures at Newbury and Uttoxeter.
The £17,000 Doncaster Mile is the class race of the day and although Don't Panic - impressive
recent winner of the Spring Mile here - looks difficult to oppose and goes on any ground, there are two past Lincoln winners in the field in the shape of Babodana and Blythe Knight, who will make this no easy task. Peter Chapple-Hyam, his trainer, says he has been "very happy" with Don't Panic since his win and has opted for this race instead of the Newbury Spring Cup, where he would have been worse off at the weights.
Earlier, The Urban-I Handicap offers another fascinating contest where Chief Editor could score for joint-champion jockey Jamie Spencer, but Bond City, who often goes well fresh, may also be in the shake-up. In the Fillies' Handicap at 5.15, lost money might be re-couped with a punt on Princess Cocoa.
Trainer Richard Hannon often makes a habit of winning Kempton's showcase Easter Stakes and today he saddles Derby entry Latin Lad, hoping to improve on his record as he teams up again with jockey Richard Hughes.
The Masaka Stakes see the likely favourite Kay Es Jay stepping down in class, but he is faced by Jazz Jam from the in-form Paul Cole yard, which boasts six winners and four placed in the past two weeks. One to surprise them both might be the promising Jeninsky.
At Newbury, Bathwick Tyres sponsor both the big races as the jumps season draws to its end. In the Hurdle, Chance Du Roy is on the upgrade and his trainer Philip Hobbs believes the extra distance will suit him. Among the opposition is Russian Around, whose trainer Nick Gifford confidently states: "It's a nice weight. He'll love the trip, track and ground and we're very hopeful."
It's Crucial can take the Handicap Chase at 3.00 and in the final race on the card, Grand National-winning jockey Timmy Murphy could again be among the winners on The Good Guy.
