Lel and Mikitenko victorious in London

Martin Lel set a new course record at the London Marathon as he won the race for the second consecutive year and the third time in the past four. The Kenyan finished ins a time of two hours five minutes and 15 seconds as he saw off the challenge of fellow countryman Samuel Wanjiru in a sprint finish.

Pre-race favourite Lel broke the previous record of 2:05.38 set by Khalid Khannounchi in 2002.

In the women's race, Germany's Irina Mikitenko marked her debut with victory with a time of 2:24.14., while Britain's Liz Yelling ran a personal best on the day to come home as the leading Briton and all but secure her place at the Olympics.

Mikitenko finished ahead of Russia's Svetlama Zakharova, while last year's Berlin marathon winner Gete Wami finished in third after slipping at the 30km mark.
