Immelman admits Masters was a rollercoaster ride

Trevor Immelman has described his Masters victory at Augusta as "the ultimate rollercoaster".The 28-year-old South African beat Tiger Woods by three shots to claim his first major victory, only four months after having a benign tumour removed.

"This has been the ultimate rollercoaster ride, and I hate rollercoasters," Immelman told the BBC.

"Here I am, after missing the cut last week, Masters champion. It is the craziest thing I have ever heard."

Fellow countryman Gary Player, until now the only South African to don the famous Green Jacket, called Immelman the night before the final day's play spurred him on.

"He left me a voicemail last night and I got it when I was leaving the premises. It gave me goosebumps," he said.

"He told me that he believed in me and I need to believe in myself.

"He told me to just go out there and be strong through adversity, because he said that adversity would come today, and I just had to deal with it.

"You know, I took that all to heart, and I am obviously thankful for the message and I am sure he is proud of me."

Trevor deserved to win. He played well the entire week and didn't break under the pressure of the final round in Augusta. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!
