Strachan revels in hard-fought Old Firm victory
Celtic's Dutch striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was the hero of the Glasgow Old Firm Derby, as his injury-time goal downed Rangers 2-1. His manager, Gordon Strachan, was delighted at the result at Celtic Park, which keeps his team in the title race with their city rivals.
Home midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura had opened the scoring with a magnificent strike, only to have his goal cancelled out by Rangers' Nacho Novo. But Strachan's team came back to beat Walter Smith's quadruple-chasing side.
He said: "It keeps it ticking along nicely.
"We showed tremendous spirit to come back and keep creating chances after missing the penalty."
The result leaves Celtic only one point behind the Scottish Premier League leaders but have played two games more than their rivals.
After a brawl and two red cards after the full time whistle, Strachan added: "I think the Old Firm games have gone back to a 1980s style.
"When I first came here it was a footballing Old Firm but it's more intense now.
"Atmosphere-wise it's good, as long as the players maintain discipline."
