Alonso looks to home comforts

Fernando Alonso is hoping to reward his loyal supporters when the Grand Prix circus arrives in Barcelona for the first race of the European season. The Spanish driver, who finished third in Catalunya last year, is hoping to impress in his Renault after failing to record a podium finish so far this season.

Alonso has already admitted that he will not be able to compete with the pace and power of Ferrari and McLaren, while BMW Sauber have also enjoyed a solid start to the season.

But the former double-world champion is hoping the backing of the home crowd will help him pull off a top three finish or even push him towards his first victory of the season.

"I benefit here from amazing support and it is very motivating," said Alonso.

"Some people see this as added pressure for me, but it's not. Instead it gives me the determination to do even better. I hope to be in a position to give the Spanish people a beautiful show. And with two races in Spain this year, I am very lucky.

"I think that once again it will be a very competitive race. All the teams and drivers know the track very well, so it is difficult for the driver to make a difference at this level. I hope that our hard work will pay us back and that our car will allow us to catch up with the other teams, although it will certainly not be easy.

"Qualifying once again will be essential, and we will have to be well placed to try and score the maximum points."
