Davis' fightback in vain in Sheffield
Six-time winner Steve Davis produced a brave fightback but it was not enough as he crashed out of the World Championships after a 10-8 first-round defeat to Stuart Bingham at the Crucible in Sheffield. Davis had been 8-3 down but fought back to level before fading away at the last.
The defeat means that Davis, known as 'The Nugget', will have to qualify for next year's event for the first time since 2003. "After getting back into the match and playing decent, it's a bitter pill to then mess up a couple of golden opportunities in the last two frames," said Davis. "It's very disappointing, even though at one stage I would have settled for showing a bit of pride." Steven Hendry had to survive a major scare before beating Mark Allen 10-9. Scot Hendry was 9-7 down with Allen needing just one more pink and a red to seal the match, but the youngster missed the former to give the seven-time champion a chance he was not going to allow to pass him by. And the 39-year-old didn't, making his experience count against his 22-year-old opponent as he sealed a memorable victory. Elsewhere, Ryan Day will face John Higgins in the last 16 after beating Michael Judge 10-6, while Mark Williams and Mark Selby are ahead in their games against Mark Davis and Mark King.
