Ovechkin steps up to force decisive game

The Washington Capitals have beaten the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 to ensure their NHL play-off series must go to a decisive seventh game. Alex Ovechkin was the hero, the league's leading scorer choosing the perfect moment to spring into life, breaking a four-game goalless streak with a quickfire double.

His goals ensured the Capitals have nearly completed a comeback from 3-1 down, and they now have home advantage for the decisive game on Tuesday night.

The Flyers were 2-0 up towards the end of the second period but were unable to hold on in front of their home crowd.

And Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau paid tribute to Ovechkin, who had been left frustrated by his impotency in the series up until now.

"The stars, it seems to happen around them, whether it's John Elway and 'The Drive' or great baseball players getting the last at-bat," said Boudreau.

"He was getting frustrated because they did such a good job on him, but he persevered and came through."
