Neptune Collonges retains the Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup
Neptune Collonges has retained the Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup. The Ruby Wlash-ridden grey, trained by Paul Nicholls, won by seven lengths from Snowy Morning, with Mossbank relegated to third.
Walsh ensured a commanding performance from the Gold Cup third-favourite, with only Snowy Morning, who came third in the Grand National, providing any sort of threat.
But Neptune Collognes completed the victory, and Nicholls insisted he was a better horse than last year.
"I was a lot more confident about him this year than last," he said.
"He was third in the Gold Cup this time, he's a better horse now and this race has always been his target.
"We knew the track, ground and everything here would be perfect this year. As long as he is in front he is great and he just needs to be ridden positively.
"It was a brilliant performance. He was entitled to win on his Gold Cup form and I think he's a better horse than last year."
