Higgins and Ebdon on top in Sheffield
John Higgins and Peter Ebdon both go into Friday's play at the World Snooker Championships in Sheffield 5-3 ahead in their second round ties over Ryan Day and Mark King respectively. Both ties are the best of 25 frames, with each evenly poised after the opening session.
Defending champion Higgins, who would take on either Stephen Hendry or Ding Junhui in the quarter-finals, raced into a 4-0 lead against Welshman Day, who saw off Michael Judge in the first round.
But Day came back into the game after some scrappy snooker, which didn't see a break of over 100, with Higgins' 96 in the first frame the closest either player got.
Higgins kept his opponent at arm's length, though, and despite allowing Day to win the last frame he is in a strong position going into the second session.
Ebdon, the 2002 world champion, was also made to work hard in his tie - the winner of which plays Shaun Murphy or Ali Carter - which was a see-saw affair against King.
Both players edged a number of tight frames, but it was Ebdon who took control by winning the final three frames, including the last in which he hit a break of 84, the highest of the match so far.
