League One round-up: Leeds secure play-off place

Dougie Freedman's fourth minute strike proved enough to secure Leeds United's place in the League One play-offs after a 1-0 win at Yeovil Town. Freedman, currently on loan at Elland Road from Crystal Palace, netted the only goal of the game, which also saw the visitors reduced to ten men when Alan Sheehan was sent-off after 64 minutes.

Leeds, who could yet be crowned champions should their appeal against a 15-point penalty succeed, struck early and then produced a determined rearguard action to preserve their lead.

Former Scotland international Freedman, who has now scored five times since his move from Selhurst Park, fired home from close-range to give Gary McAllister's side the lead.

Yeovil pushed forward in search of an equaliser with Terry Skiverton and Lloyd Owusu both missing good opportunities, while Leeds goalkeeper Casper Ankergren was in inspired form.

The hosts were given an extra boost when Leeds midfielder Sheehan was given a straight red card for a crude two-footed challenge on Lee Peltier with 26 minutes of normal time remaining, but they were unable to find the breakthrough as the McAllister's men clinched their place in the play-offs.

Although that sure was not a high scoring game, at least it was good enough to earn Leed's a spot in the playoffs. After all who needs epic games, when you can just have wins? That's all that most people will probably be concerned about anyway. Not that I blame them on that.
