Kovalainen lifted to hospital

Heikki Kovalainen has been airlifted to hospital after being involved in a 140mph crash at the Spanish Grand Prix. The McLaren driver appeared to suffer a problem with the left front rim of his car and was sent careering off the track and into the tyre barrier at breakneck speed on lap 22.

The Finn, who had started the afternoon sixth on the grid, was taken to hospital in Barcelona as a precaution with team CEO Martin Whitmarsh positive over the driver's chances of being back in time for the Turkish Grand Prix on May 11.

"Heikki had no visible injuries and has been flow to hospital as a precaution," Whitmarsh told ITV.

I can't believe Heikki was not seriously injured in that crash. I wish they made regular autos as tough as they make those race cars...a lot less people would die in motor crashes. I'm glad he's okay, though.

Oh no, that really scared me. I'm glad to hear it was just as a precaution, though, and that it doesn't appear anything serious happened. Hopefully Keikki isn't too shaken up and will be back out there in the next run.
