Hamilton delighted to be back on the podium

Lewis Hamilton expressed his relief after claiming third place in the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. The McLaren driver, who has attracted criticism for his poor recent performances, produced a solid performance to come from fifth on the grid to finish behind a Ferrari one-two of Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa.

Hamilton, who won the opening race of the season in Australia, finished 13th in Bahrain three weeks ago and was delighted to be back on the podium for the first time since the first race of the season.

"It was a great relief and it's good to be back," said the Briton.

"When we qualified fifth we knew it would be hard to beat Ferrari but we made up the places and we had a feeling that Fernando Alonso would be lighter so that wouldn't cause us many problems.

"Towards the end I tried to keep up with Ferrari and in the last sector I kept very close and kept pushing."

Hamilton made a terrific start to the race and managed to pass fourth place Robert Kubica on the opening corner, a manoeuvre of which he was particularly proud of.

He added: "I know from past experience that Robert is difficult to overtake, but I was able to get up the inside and past him.

"It was pretty smooth sailing and it was a good start. It's good to be back on the podium after two poor races."

It's good to see him back in the running again. So often they start to lose hope and then do poorly again, but he really pulled through it and looks like he'll continue doing well.
