Webb and Snyder combine to great effect for the Diamondbacks
Brandon Webb and Chris Snyder combined to devastating effect as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 2-1. Webb won his personal battle with San Diego's Jake Peavy, and in doing so became the first ever player to win all of his first six major games.
Snyder, Webb's regular catcher, played despite having the flu, and then connected with a pitch from a disappointed Peavy, who suggested after the game that he had let his side down.
"We had a chance to beat the best team in the National League, but I couldn't do what I needed to do for us to win the game," said Peavy.
"I threw the wrong pitch. Unfortunately, that one pitch cost us the ballgame."
And Webb paid tribute to Snyder: "I trust him totally," he said.
"To have him back there just gives me a lot of confidence. He sucked it up and battled for me today, and I appreciate it."
Arizona manager Bob Melvin then revealed the scale of Snyder's achievement in playing despite being very ill.
He said: "For Chris Snyder to even play in that game, let alone starting, is pretty amazing. At times he was getting dizzy. To accomplish what he did behind the plate and at the plate today was huge for us."
