Goal difference could be crucial to decide Premier League

Following Chelsea's win over Manchester United over the weekend, the Premier League title could be decided on goal difference for the very first time.

The last time the English top flight had two teams ending the season on the same points was 19 years ago - Arsenal won the Division One title on goals scored after beating Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield in the final game of the season in May 1989.

In the entire history of the English top flight the top two teams finished on equal points only five times - Huddersfield beating Cardiff in 1924, Portsmouth beating Wolves in 1950, Arsenal beating Preston in 1952, Manchester Utd beating Leeds in 1964 and Arsenal beating Liverpool in 1989.

Manchester United and Chelsea are currently tied on 81 points with just two games to play, with United on top because of their superior goal difference.

I think its really exciting to have to ball clubs so close for the division title. Even if it happens a bit more often it really shows you the quality of the teams in the division. How often can you say that of a sporting division?
