Weir passed fit for Rangers' vital Uefa Cup clash with Fiorentina

Glasgow Rangers have received more good news ahead of their crucial Uefa Cup semi-final second leg in Florence on Thursday night - Scotland defender David Weir has been passed fit despite being ruled out earlier in the week. This comes after suspended captain Barry Ferguson and Kevin Thomson return to the fold.

The tie is perfectly poised after a goalless first leg at Ibrox last week.

Weir, 37, thought he could not play earlier this week after injuring his groin in the Old Firm Derby against Celtic on Sunday. But he has now been given the green light, and his manager Walter Smith is delighted.

Smith said: "When (Weir) came off on Sunday, we thought he would miss the Fiorentina match.

"But he has made a great recovery and there is now a chance he will make it.

"It's obviously a boost for us because he and Carlos Cuellar - along with Allan McGregor behind them - have been key players for us this season."

Steven Davis, who also had a groin complaint after Sunday's match, has recovered from injury and will partner Ferguson and Thomson in midfield following their return from European suspension.
