Zenit send Bayern crashing out
Zenit St Petersburg will play in their very first European final after producing a stunning performance to dump pre-tournament favourites Bayern Munich out of the Uefa Cup.The Russian side cruised to a 3-0 win on the night, going through 4-1 on aggregate courtesy of the 1-1 draw they claimed at the Allianz Arena last week.
Two goals from Pavel Pogrebnyak added to strikes from Konstantin Zyrianov and Viktor Fayzulin put pay to Bayern's hopes of making the final as Dick Advocaat's men sealed their place in the final in Manchester later this month.
The only sour point for Zenit was the booking of two-goal hero Pogrebnyak which will rule him out of the final.
The hosts took just four minutes to move into the lead as Pogrebnyak fired home his ninth goal of the competition with a stunning low free-kick which left Bayern 'keeper Olvier Kahn with no chance.
Zenit doubled their advantage just before the break through Zyrianov as the midfielder produced a delightful dummy to outsmart the Bayern defence before slotting the ball past Kahn.
The German side were fortunate to reach the break just two goals behind and any hopes of a famous comeback were well and truly dashed as Fayzulin headed home a third just nine miuntes into the second half.
And Zenit confirmed their supremacy with Pogrebnyak's second of the evening and his 10th of the tournament as he rifled home Alejandro Dominguez's cut-back to leave Bayern's dreams in tatters and send his side into their first ever European final.
