Erlandsson leads the way in Spain
Sweden's Martin Erlandsson leads the way at the Spanish Open after hitting a seven-under-par 65. Erlandsson, who is ranked 345th in the world, enjoys a one-shot lead over Spaniards Ignacio Garrido and Jordi Garcia.
Colin Montgomerie recovered from a disastrous start, in which he bogeyed the first two holes, to shoot a respectable 70, while Darren Clarke came two shots further back on the opening day.
Clarke, who rediscovered his form with a first title win in two-and-a-half years in Shanghai last Sunday, blamed a lack of sleep for his poor showing.
"I didn't get much sleep again - last week took more out of me than I realised," said the 39-year-old.
"Mentally, I was not at the races. The game's fine, but my head's tired - I made some poor decisions."
