Golden Boy Gavin planning to turn professional
Amateur World champion, Frankie Gavin, has confirmed that he will turn professional after the Olympic Games in Beijing. The 24 year old lightweight who boxes for the Hall Green club in Birmingham is one of the favourites for the gold medal in Beijing, after an impressive World championships in Chicago last year.
Gavin became the first ever British World champion when he grabbed the gold medal by outpointing Italian Domenico Valentino in the final last November, after beating the 2004 Olympic featherweight champion and defending World champion Alexey Tishchenko of Russia in the semi-finals, Tishchenko hadn't lost a fight at any weight since 2003.
Gavin said: "I will be turning professional after Beijing whatever happens.
"If I come back with a gold medal I will have accomplished everything there is to be accomplished in the amateur sport.
"I've already held some talks but I'm keeping my options open. I know if I succeed in Beijing my earning potential will rise a lot so I have got to concentrate on making sure that happens.
"Fighting in the Olympics in London would be a great thing but it is too far away for me. I will be ready for new challenges and I am looking forward to having the chance to prove myself as a professional."
The Golden Boy of British amateur boxing could well team up with American promoters Golden Boy Promotions, owned by Oscar De La Hoya, although there will be a queue of British promoters scrambling for his signature.

Well, I will have to wish Frankie Gavin the best of luck! He is doing excellent in the Olympics, and I have every reason to believe that things will be the same if he does in fact turn professional. Talent is talent, and Gavin frankly has more than enough to be a top competitor in the professional world.
