Chien-Ming Wang first to win six games this season
New York Yankees' Chien-Ming Wang became the first American League pitcher to win six games this season after a 5-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Yankees who improved to 13-16.
Wang pitched six scoreless innings and was backed up by some good hitting from Hideki Matsui, whose first-inning RBI single got the scoreboard ticking, and Melky Cabrera who chipped in with a two-run RBI double in the second.
Seattle's starting pitcher Erik Bedard was not helped by some sloppy fielding. The Mariners made four errors in the field in the first three innings, allowing two unearned runs in the process.
However, Wang's achievement has masked some of the Yankees' failings in a disappointing start to the season, according to co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner.
"We just can't win one out of five games, every time Wang pitches," Steinbrenner said. "It's not going to work. It's not a good win percentage. Starting pitching is where it's at, especially in the postseason. At this point, we'll see if we even make the postseason."
Wang joins the Arizona Diamondbacks' Brandon Webb on six wins for the season. The National League's leading pitcher has won all of his starts so far this year.
