Henrythenavigator takes 2000 Guineas
Henrythenavigator came out of the pack to shock favourite New Approach and take the 2,000 Guineas, the first Classic of the flat season at Newmarket today. Johnny Murtagh piloted the 11-1 shot to victory to give trainer Aidan O'Brien the fifth 2,000 Guineas of his remarkable career and send the bookies away happy.
The race looked like it was there for the taking for New Approach, sent off hot favourite at 11-8. Kevin Manning's mount controlled matters from the front and had seemingly blown his rivals away when he kicked for home at the two furlong mark.
However, the winner timed his run from the back of the pack perfectly to storm past in the final furlong, and although New Approach came back at the end, Henrythenavigator clung on to win by a short head.
Last year's joint-Champion Jockey Seb Sanders rode 100-1 shot Stubbs Art to a fine third place, but the well-fancied second favourite Ibn Khaldun, under Frankie Dettori disappointed on the big day.
