Barcelona will perform Guard of Honour for Madrid

Barcelona will be forced to perform a Guard of Honour on Wednesday night, when they go to newly-crowned La Liga champions and bitter rivals Real Madrid. Bernd Schuster, the Madrid manager, was delighted to seal the title in his first season with three league games remaining.

Having played 35 rounds, Madrid hold an insurmountable 10-point lead over Villarreal, with Barcelona in third after a disappointing season.

Schuster, who played for both Madrid and Barcelona, was pleased that the title was clinched in the fashion it was: with a tough 2-1 win over Osasuna away.

With the backdrop of a hostile Basque crowd, Fabio Cannavaro was ejected after only 12 seconds of the second half before the hosts went 1-0 up after Patxi Punal's 82nd-minute penalty.

Arjen Robben and Gonzalo Higuain scored for Madrid within the final four minutes to seal their second consecutive La Liga win. It's the first time Real Madrid has retained the league title since it won five straight times through 1990. The club has now amassed a Spanish record 31 championships.

German Schuster, 48, said: "Winning the title where they don't like us very much makes it more special.

"It was a game that had everything. It was like an American movie."
