Edinburgh could host next 'Millennium Magic' weekend
Super League's Millennium Magic, which concluded on Sunday, could move from Cardiff's Millennium Stadium to Edinburgh's Murrayfield, the organising body - the Rugby Football League - have hinted. There have been two 'away' weekends - one last year and one this - and both have been in Cardiff.
The RFL were enthused by the turn-out - 63,144 over the two days in Cardiff, which represented an increase of more than 4,000 on the inaugural event in 2007.
They are committed to repeating the event in 2009 but not necessarily at the same venue, with Edinburgh and Belfast thought to have made rival bids.
The weekend is believed to generate around £10m for the local economy, as well as mustering popularity for the game in that area.
RFL media spokesman Craig Spence said: "Not surprisingly, a number of cities are looking at staging this event - the economic benefits are massive."
RFL chief executive Nigel Wood added: "After last year we listened to what supporters suggested and we'll do the same again.
"We will make further improvements each year to this event to ensure it becomes a must-see event for rugby league fans."
Murrayfield, which hosted the Challenge Cup finals in 2000 and 2002 during the re-building of Wembley, will almost certainly stage next year's away weekend if the League decides to ditch Cardiff.
