Arsenal confirm Flamini departure

Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini will join Italian side AC Milan on a free transfer, the London-based club have officially confirmed. The news was widely expected as Frenchman Flamini was out of contract from July 1, and the Italian side had already stated they would sign the player.

The departure of Flamini comes as a bitter blow to manager Arsene Wenger, who has seen previously-unheralded Flamini - who rejected two contract offers from Arsenal - strike up a hugely effective central midfield partnership with Cesc Fabregas this season.

With Flamini's fellow midfielder Alexander Hleb rumoured to be on his way to Inter Milan, it promises to be a tricky summer for Wenger, whose team fell just short in both the Premier and Champions Leagues this season.

The Gunners confirmed Flamini's departure on their official website, saying: "Arsenal can confirm that Mathieu Flamini will join Italian Serie A side AC Milan on 1st July 2008 on a free transfer.

"Flamini (24), who joined Arsenal from Olympique Marseille in 2004, made a total of 153 appearances for the Gunners scoring eight times and has been a regular in the first team this season, making 30 appearances in the Premier League.

"During his time with the Club, Mathieu won an FA Cup winner's medal in 2005 and played at full back in the team's run to the UEFA Champions League Final in 2006.

"Everyone at Arsenal Football Club wishes Mathieu the best of luck for the future."
