Federer on form in Rome

World number one Roger Federer continued his fine clay court form by swatting aside the challenge of Guillermo Canas in the Rome Masters, defeating the Argentine 6-3 6-3. Federer has already won in Estoril and was runner-up to Rafael Nadal in Monte Carlo as he continues his preparation for the French Open in style.

Canas, who twice beat the Swiss earlier this year, had no answer and Federer will face either Ivo Karlovic or Potito Starace in the third round as his recovery from a poor start to the season - blamed on glandular fever - appears complete.

"I played well," said Federer, who has never won at Roland Garros. "I felt I was in the groove right away again from Monaco.

"It was a good match to start off the Rome campaign and I hope I can move on from here."

He continued: "I'm back in my stride again and feel like I'm playing well and nothing ever happened."

Elsewhere in the same event, Andy Roddick defeated Mardy Fish 6-1 6-4, and Juan Carlos Ferrero beat Nicolas Kiefer 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4.
