Nadal crashes out in Rome

Rafael Nadal crashed out of the Rome Masters after suffering just his second defeat in 105 matches on clay after losing 7-5 6-1 against fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero. The world number two, who has won the tournament for the past three years, appeared to suffer with blisters before finally succumbing to his compatriot.

Ferrero will now face either Andy Murray or Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

David Nalbandian also suffered a shock defeat after going down 6-4 7-4 to Nicolas Almagro, while fifth seed David Ferrer saw his hopes of success evaporate after losing in three sets to Radek Stepanek.

But world number three Novak Djokovic had no such problems, easing past Belgium's Steve Darcis 6-4 6-0 to clinch his place in the last eight.
