Murray beaten in Rome

Murray, who staved off five match points to keep his faint hopes alive, was outplayed for much of the contest, eventually falling to a third defeat in five meetings against Wawrinka courtesy of a second set tie-break.

The match started in disastrous fashion for Murray as he slumped to a 4-1 deficit as his wayward approach allowed his Swiss opponent to take control.

And Wawrinka made the most of his dominance, closing out the opening set with a minimal of fuss on the way to booking his place in the last eight and a meeting with Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Murray, who was seeded 16 for the tournament, looked in control in the second set after taking a 3-1 lead.

But the Scot failed to take advantage of his dominance and eventually paid the price in a tense tie-break as Wawrinka prevailed 7-5.

Andy Murray's hopes of winning the Rome Masters were extinguished after the British number one suffered a 6-2 7-6 defeat against Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka.
