Cincinnati Reds humiliate The Cubs

The Cincinnati Reds have humiliated the Chicago Cubs, Joey Votto hitting three home runs as the Reds eased to a 9-0 victory at Wrigley Park. Jon Lieber was the fall-guy for the Cubs, becoming only the second pitcher in the franchise's history to give up four homers in an innings.

And the pitcher was inconsolable after the game, admitting that he struggled to stop the slide once it had started.

"It just happened so fast," said Lieber, whose previous worst performance had seen him give up three homers in a game.

"You try and regroup, and it just didn't happen. Basically, (pitches were) across the middle of the plate. I'm the kind of pitcher that's not going to get away with stuff like that."

Votto was completely surprised, in contrast, as the second-year player had never table more than one homer in a game before.

"I'm like a kid," he said. "I thought it was cool. It's not a big part of my game.

"I thought if I got a good swing on a good pitch, I had a chance to do some good. In games like this, you don't know why it happens. You just go with the flow, and that's what I did."
