Garcia looking to end title drought
Sergio Garcia insists he can finally end his victory drought by winning the Players Championship. The Spaniard, who has not won a title for three years, shot a six-under 66 to finish the opening day two shots clear of American duo Paul Goydos and Kenny Perry.
Garcia, who finished second at Sawgrass last year, said: "I seem to be driving the ball better than I have the past year or so.
"But more than anything, the most important thing is not that my short game looks good, but that it feels good, because at the end of the day, what you need is to feel it, and I'm starting to feel it.
"Even if I had won last week, I would still be as motivated, trying to win this week, so that doesn't change.
"At the end of the day, the only thing I can do is keep working on it, keep giving myself chances, and it's going to happen. I feel like it's getting closer and closer. At least now I feel I can do it."
Ian Poulter is the leading Briton on the course, sitting three shots off the lead, but he was less than satisfied with his high bogey count.
"I made a couple of bogeys, which was frustrating, but you're going to make a couple of mistakes around this course and the mistakes I made were just single bogeys, which is nice, since I have been making double bogeys of late," he told Sky Sports.
"I have been making an awful lot of bogeys lately. Last week I made 17 birdies and one eagle and shot two-under-par, which is insane."
