Ramprakash critical of Shah treatment

Mark Ramprakash has criticised England's treatment of Owais Shah and called for him to be given an extended run in the side this summer. The Middlesex batsman toured Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the winter but was overlooked in favour of Ravi Bopara and Andrew Strauss for all six Tests.

Shah is expected to be overlooked again when England's squad for next week's first Test against New Zealand is announced on Sunday.

Ramprakash insists his former Middlesex team-mate is being treated harshly.

"Owais has been a consistent run scorer for the last six years so you have to put a question mark against the decision not to play him," Ramprakash said.

"There must be some reason why he has not been picked. I would like to know the reason.

"I would like to know what the England selectors are thinking seeing as he has scored so heavily.

"In terms of shear talent he is the most talented batsman of his generation.

"Someone like Andrew Strauss for example, good a player as he is, was left out of the Sri Lanka tour but then came straight back into the side.

"Having seen Ravi Bopara play three Tests in Sri Lanka, Owais must have been thinking he would get the chance to play in New Zealand but he didn't get a chance there either.

"From Owais' point of view he has got to have a chat with the selectors to find out what is going on."
