Hamilton: I made a mistake

Lewis Hamilton admits he made a mistake by deciding to use harder tyres during qualifying for the Turkish Grand Prix. The McLaren driver, who will start from third on the grid, took the option of using the prime tyres instead of the softer variety which were favoured by his rivals and was left to rue his decision.

Hamilton will now start the race at Istanbul Park on hard tyres and the Briton admits the decision may ultimately have cost him the opportunity of snatching pole position away from Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

"It was a tough qualifying session for me," said Hamilton. "I had a fantastic lap in Q1, and in Q2 I struggled a bit on the option tyre so I opted for the prime tyre (for Q3) because I felt it would be more consistent.

"I did it and I guess I made the wrong decision."

However, Hamilton is remaining confident of claiming yet another podium finish with just team-mate Heikki Kovalainen and pole sitter Massa starting ahead of him.

He added: "I think we have got a good package this weekend and myself and Heikki have shown we are up there with the Ferraris and should be able to push them in the race."
