Saints squeak past Warrington
St Helens will be in the Challenge Cup quarter-final draw after a pulsating 40-34 win over Warrington. The 13-try epic saw the lead exchange hands six times in a game that will live long in the memory.
Adrian Morley drew first blood for the visitors, but Saints responded with the first of two Willie Talau scores. And they took the lead for the first time when Chris Flannery crossed to finish off a superb team move.
Chris Hicks converted his own try to give the Wolves the lead once more but the home side went into the break in front after Francis Melli ran straight through Hicks to touch down.
The second-half started at the same breakneck speed that the first finished. Hicks drew Warrington level with his second score, but Keiron Cunningham soon cancelled out that effort.
Saints' lead was shortlived however, as Kevin Penny ran half the length of the pitch to score one of the tries of the season following great handling on their own line from the Wolves.
The visitors now seemed in the ascendancy once more, but scores from Talau, Paul Clough and Lee Gilmour, plus the unerring boot of man-of-the-match Sean Long, looked to have put the contest beyond doubt.
However, there was one last twist in the tale, with Ben Westwood and Simon Grix scoring to set up the grandstand finish the game deserved. And only some desperate defending from Saints on Warrington's final possession saw them through to the next round.
